Monday resolutions! // Week three…

Image: From ‘The Art of Clean Up’, by Ursus Wehrli

Have you ever heard of that old saying that in order to keep a tidy home, you should never leave a room empty handed?

The idea is that if you always leave a room taking with you something that doesn’t belong there and return it to its rightful place, you home will always stay tidy and well organised.

I’ve been working hard on being tidier over the past couple of months, but still have a long way to go. I have a dreadful habit of completing tasks (getting dressed, making tea, baking, working on my laptop etc.) and as soon as I’m finished, walking away leaving behind the detritus (discarded clothes, spoons, ingredients, cables etc.) without even a backwards glance. It’s bad!

So this week I’m going to try my hardest to keep to the rule of never leaving a room empty-handed, and hope that it helps me to slow down and take the time to keep our house tidy.

Do you have a resolution you’ll be trying to keep to in the week ahead? If you fancy sharing your own Monday resolution on your blog, please do go ahead! I’d just be grateful if you’d include a link back to my post in yours, so that we can share the love around :) Happy Monday, everyone!

As far as these simple tidiness rules go, I also really like the 1 minute rule, if you can sort something in less than one minute, do it straight away :) I also like to try and tidy a little before we go to bed, because I hate waking up in a mess (and the same when we go, especially for more than a couple of hours, I’m always so disappointed in myself, when I come back and the flat is a tip). Good luck :)

Oooh I love that rule! Definitely going to keep that in mind during the next week, and hopefully always! :) Thanks for sharing!

This is such a good idea. I’m a horribly messy person! Like you, I just tend to walk away from the mess. It’s not until it has built up and I’m left with a big clean up job that I realise that I’ve even been doing it. I’m definitely going to join you in not leaving a room empty handed this week.

I never realised until you just wrote about it, but I often do that thing where you don’t leave a room empty handed, and I don’t think our house is much tidier for it! So just think what would happen if I didn’t do it haha. My constant resolution is to find a happy balance between work and play since I work from home it’s so easy to get distracted!

This theory could revolutionize my home! I’m also guilty of just dumping what I’ve been using and leaving it for later, whereas Ed will always tidy up the plates etc after dinner. I need to start doing this….my mission will be to not leave a room empty handed for the whole summer. Let’s see if I end up with a tidy house! I suppose the alternative could be that I’ll end up with one room full of everything I picked up? Hmmmm x

I eat pretty well anyway but I’m really trying hard to eat more varied foods; I tend to get stuck into a habit of eating the same foods (but in different ways) throughout the week and I rely heavily on bread, which I’d prefer not to.

What a great tip, I must try harder at keeping my room tidy!
My resolution is to not drink anything this week! I have 1.5lbs to lose before I go to Reading fest to get my half stone mark… really want to do it!

I’d love to do something like this on my blog! It’s really great to be able to have goals for the week. I’ll link back to here, for sure :)

That is a really good idea, I think my husband would benefit from it more than me as he always leaves stuff lying around.
I need to be more tidy in general. I’m terrible for starting to clean something and then getting distracted and starting to clean somewhere else. Everything just ends up half tidy but never gets finished! x

I love that idea! We just moved so I’m definitely trying to get organized–this seems like a good first step. Thank you for sharing! So happy to have happened upon your blog! xoxo

Its true, that does always help. Hard to stick to though haha !

This is definitely a good tip – I think my other half would appreciate if I did this!

My week’s resolution is to do more exercise. I’ve been slacking the past couple of months, so I want to get out for at least one half hour walk/run and two yoga classes.

After I get ready in the morning, my room is a tip!! It’s not so bad during the holidays as I’m not in a rush, but hopefully I can get up earlier for school (when I go back in September) and be able to return home to a lovely tidy room! x

  • Lauren

Oh I do love these kinds of posts and I think your blog is really lovely. x

  • Beeta

So I tried this tip yesterday and today and my house is no doubt looking MUCH tidier already! Thank you, my mum is delighted! :) hope it worked for you too :)
