- today is my ma’s birthday! yay! i’m spending the day baking the birthday cake she’s requested ( lime cake with cream cheese frosting), and have managed to get lime syrup everywhere. everything in our house, including the dog, is covered in a film of stickiness. still, i’m hoping it’ll be worth it! i just tasted a spoonful (or ten) of leftover syrup, and it was mighty delicious! as well as cake, we’ll be having dinner of roast duck legs with a blackberry and balsamic sauce, served with roast potatoes, and sauteed spinach. yum!
- whilst my cake was baking this afternoon, i watched nativity. yup, it’s a christmas film. and it was 100% awesome.
- homeland update: jason and i are halfway through the second season. it’s epic, and amazing, and i don’t want it to end. can anyone recommend a good tv series to fill the void when we’re finished watching this season of homeland? we tried madmen the other day, and got about half an hour into the first episode before getting bored and switching off! is it worth persevering with? :)
today: i’ve been listening to- lana del ray off to the races. watching- last night’s episode of miranda. eating- yesterday’s mushroom risotto!
how has your tuesday been so far, my lovely readers? :)

i woke up at 5am on the morning of my birthday. i did the same the year before. and the year before that, too. it’s pretty much compulsory to wake up at silly o’clock on your birthday though, right? last year i tried to convince jase to wake up and let me open presents, but he wasn’t having any of it. some people, hey?
anyway, my 22nd birthday has been just peachy :) teddy helped me open my presents at the more *grown up* hour of 11am (just look at his sweet face!) and then we all (apart from ted) headed out for brunch in town. all those morning workouts i did last week were totally working up to today, so i brunched like a pro and ate two full courses. yum.
instead of a proper birthday cake, i asked my ma to make my grandma’s signature ‘birthday/christmas/easter and all the days in between’ treat, rice crispy cakes! they tasted just as though they’d come from the tiny kitchen in my grandma’s cottage, and made my birthday so so special. thank you, ma.

yesterday, the following series of thoughts trotted through my mind in the space of about two seconds…

‘i really need a pair of properly warm gloves for dog walking now the weather’s getting bitter…’

‘i think i’ll buy myself some in the next week or so…’

‘oh actually i can’t, because mum and jason will be miffed with me for buying stuff for myself since christmas and my birthday are just around the corner (my birthday is the 22nd december!)…’

‘it really is inconvenient to have my birthday and christmas all at once halfway through winter, because people feel you’ve cheated them out of a potential gift if you buy yourself things around this time of year…’

‘it really would have been better if i’d been born in october or november, because then i could ask for things like nice warm gloves and scarves for my birthday and then i’d be able to wear them right through the winter…’

‘i’ll tell mum that she really should have planned this all better…’

‘actually, that probably won’t go down too well…’
is this not the most boring train of thought ever?! and also, when did i stop wanting gameboy games and sea monkeys and start wanting gloves for my birthday? when did i get old?!

p.s the photo above is entirely unrelated to this post. it just makes me laugh! :)

happy beginning of october, everybody! let’s hope this month brings plenty of blustery autumn days, red leaves, hot chocolate and cosy evenings in.
i was just trawling through pinterest for pictures of brownies to sate my chocolate craving (don’t worry, i’ve sent jason out food shopping with strict instructions to bring me back a sweet treat or ten ;) and stumbled across these ones, from made with pink. my mouth is watering just looking at them! and they’re going straight to the top of this month’s ‘to bake’ list. also on the list is chutney, and some form of christmas cake! is it bad that i’m far more interested in baking than i am in my degree? ;)
teddy’s had his first inoculation, and so in three weeks time (after inoculation number two) he’ll be able to go out for walks! jason and i are so looking forward to donning our wellies and coats, and going off for long tramps through the woods with this excitable little chap!
it’s only one week until jason’s 25th birthday! he needs to decide what cake he’d like me to bake for him :) when i asked a couple of days ago what he fancied, he replied ‘caterpillar cake’! i think he was joking though…i hope he was joking…
what do you all have lined up for this month? :)
