after our week away, i was so excited yesterday to get back into my own little kitchen and to cook homely, familiar foods. on holiday there was such an abundance of food at every meal that i kind of got sick of it, even though it was all totally delicious. i also sort of feel that (at least for me) so much of the joy of food is tied up in creating it- all the mixing and sharing and kneading and baking. so whilst it’s a treat to eat out once in a while, eating out meal after meal for a week made me miss that vital creative part of the process.
so yesterday (whilst in the middle of a suitcase unpacking and laundry marathon) i had a sudden urge to make up some bread dough, and decided to just go with it! i made olive oil and salt breadsticks, garlic bread, and pizza bianca, and jason and ate our little feast sat outside in the garden.
in the photo above, i’m wearing my grandma’s sweet little gold and pearl ring. i wear it every single day, and when i’m cooking i always think about all the wonderful food that it’s seen created by my grandma’s hands, and love that now it’s on my hands and part of my kitchen too. it’s like a little piece of grandmotherly love and heritage going into everything i cook, and it makes my heart happy.

it was completely and utterly blissful! we went to the lovely island of crete, right in the centre of the mediterranean sea. thank you jason for a wonderful week of swimming, sunbathing, eating five meals a day, silliness, heart to hearts, drawing pictures with suntan lotion, pitta bread and greek salad, freckles, finding stray cats to feed and pet, icecream, snorkelling, reading trashy books, and lots and lots of laughter :)
one of the nicest things was that we felt truely happy to come home at the end of the holiday to our little house by the big pond. we’re taking it as a sign that whilst it’s nice to get away, we’re pretty pleased with what we’ve got going on at home, too.
p.s. thank you mama for taking such good care of our little alfie whilst we were away. sorry that he gave you a panic attack by disappearing for an entire evening, and then eventually coming back with a baby mouse in his mouth. i am sure that it was a gift to show that he’d accepted you ;)
here is our holiday, in photographs…

i’ve had such a strange feeling recently- are you ready for this?
i don’t.want.to.shop.
i’ve never felt like this…EVER! but it’s actually really nice. i wonder if maybe it’s because i’ve been spending so much time looking at beautiful style blogs online recently? i’ve been finding that style blogs inspire me to make better use of the clothes i already own, rather than making my wardrobe seem inadequate as i find glossy fashion magazines often do. it’s one of the things that i truly love about the internet and style blogs like this one- examples of normal (albeit fabulous!) women demonstrating how they make their wardrobe work for them on a day to day basis.
that’s not to say that i don’t have the odd item in mind that i’d like to buy! i’ve loved my favourite jigsaw stripey top to death and so am itching to replace it with a fresh one- but this feeling of contentment and satisfaction with what i own feels pretty nice, and i’m hoping it lasts all summer :)

dear stomach…i’m sorry for eating so many carbs when bikini-time is so soon. i swear i’ll stop…after one last biscuit.
dear jason’s sister, brother in law, and gorgeous niece and nephew…we can’t wait for you to get here!
dear sunday roast…you are amazing, and i sort of love that we get to eat you year-round when the weather is this rubbish.
dear mother nature and controller of the weather… is england on your naughty list?
dear bank balance…yep, it’s been one of those months. sorry.
dear alfie… to date, you’ve brought us a dead pigeon, dead mice, living mice, a squished baby bird, and an entire bird’s nest and eggs. consider this a warning- one more ‘present’, and we’re putting a collar on you…with a bell on it!

have a lovely weekend, everyone!
